Cost of Living NYC vs Dallas: Who Wins?
City War • 6 min read • Updated for tax year 2025 • Estimates, not tax advice
Quick answer: Dallas wins on money, NYC wins on everything else. On $100,000 single, Dallas keeps about $78,736; NYC keeps about $73,784 minus ~3-4% city tax — a gap near $8,000 a year before rent even enters.
Tax gap first
Texas takes $0 state. New York State takes about $4,952 on $100k, and the city tacks on roughly another $3,000+. Federal (~$13,614) and FICA (~$7,650) are identical in both places.
Then rent doubles the gap
Median one-bedrooms run ~$3,200 in Manhattan-adjacent NYC versus ~$1,650 in Dallas. That $1,550 monthly rent gap ($18,600 a year) dwarfs the tax gap. Combined, Dallas can leave $25,000+ more breathing room on the same salary.
When NYC still wins
Salaries are not equal in practice: NYC roles often pay 15-30% more, and car-free living erases ~$700/month of car costs. Run both offers through the calculator with real numbers instead of vibes.
Method: 2025 federal brackets after the standard deduction ($15,000 single), Social Security 6.2% to $176,100, Medicare 1.45% (+0.9% over $200k single). State figures use simplified progressive tables for CA/NY, published flat rates where flat, labelled planning estimates elsewhere. Excludes city tax, credits and itemized deductions.
