Hourly to Salary: The Flip That TikTok Loves
Viral • 2 min read • Updated for tax year 2025 • Estimates, not tax advice
Quick answer: hourly × 2,080 = yearly gross ($25 → $52,000). Salary ÷ 2,080 = hourly ($75,000 → ~$36.06/hr gross, ~$29.39/hr take-home in Texas).
The 2,080 rule
40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 working hours a year. Memorize three anchors: $20/hr ≈ $41,600, $30/hr ≈ $62,400, $50/hr ≈ $104,000. For take-home hourly, divide the after-tax annual number instead — that is the rate your life actually runs on.
Where the flip lies
Salaried 50-hour weeks quietly cut your hourly rate 20%. A $75k salary at 50 hrs/week is ~$28.85/hr gross — less than a $30/hr hourly job. And overtime flips it back: hourly workers can out-earn salaried peers in crunch months. Flip any number in the calculator.
Method: 2025 federal brackets after the standard deduction ($15,000 single), Social Security 6.2% to $176,100, Medicare 1.45% (+0.9% over $200k single). State figures use simplified progressive tables for CA/NY, published flat rates where flat, labelled planning estimates elsewhere. Excludes city tax, credits and itemized deductions.
