$18 an Hour to Salary: Can You Live on It?

Quick answer: $18/hr full-time = $37,440 a year gross. After tax, about $32,122 in Texas (~$2,677/mo) or $31,400 in California — tight but survivable with roommates outside the priciest metros.
The math
Federal is only about $2,454 (the standard deduction shelters the first $15,000), FICA about $2,864. Low earners lose a bigger share to FICA than to income tax — the opposite of popular belief.
Can you live on it?
At $2,677 a month, the 30% rule allows ~$800 in rent: a room, not an apartment, in most cities. It works in Houston, Phoenix or Atlanta with roommates; it does not work solo in NYC, SF or Seattle. Overtime is the lever: 5 extra hours a week at $27/hr adds ~$7,000 a year gross.

Method: 2025 federal brackets after the standard deduction ($15,000 single), Social Security 6.2% to $176,100, Medicare 1.45% (+0.9% over $200k single). State figures use simplified progressive tables for CA/NY, published flat rates where flat, labelled planning estimates elsewhere. Excludes city tax, credits and itemized deductions.
